Why Learning About Astronomy Is Great for Your Child
Even with modern technology today, the universe is still full of mysteries that we have yet to discover. We know of galaxies and planets, hundreds or even thousands of lightyears away. The empty vastness of space spans trillions of miles, and traveling to anything outside the solar system seems impossible at the moment. But still, in all that mystery also lies this grand sense of awe at the scale of our universe, and even children can be amazed by it.
There are many ways you can excite and interest your child. You can get them a kids’ telescope or read them bedtime stories of fantasy and fun, and while that’s completely fine, it’s not necessarily something that’s grounded in reality. If you want to showcase the wonders of what our world has to offer, then you may want to introduce your child to astronomy.
WHAT IS ASTRONOMY FOR KIDS?
Simply put, astronomy is the study or the science of space and celestial bodies. This includes stars, planets, asteroids, solar systems, and the like. There are many branches of astronomy, each dealing with a specific part of the vast collection that is the universe. For your children to get into astronomy, however, you can start small — at least, relatively speaking. You can begin with the planets and the star closest to our home; the Solar System.
The Solar System is home to interesting planets — you’ve got incredibly hot planets in Mercury and Venus, gas giants in Jupiter and Saturn, as well as freezing planets in Neptune and Uranus. The variety of these planets gives each one its charm, and these characteristics will interest your child. Once you’ve noticed they’ve taken a liking to a particular planet, you can introduce to them the various moons and features of that planet.
WHY SHOULD YOU TEACH ASTRONOMY TO YOUR CHILD?
It’s a great way to keep them interested
What excites children? Simple — anything that isn’t mundane. If it isn’t part of their daily lives, or if it’s something that seems out of this world (in a literal or figurative sense), then they’ll feel excited about it. Astronomy is one of the branches of science that resonates well with children because it deals with topics that are so grand and amazing that they sound almost like a fantasy.
So even if you don’t care about the topic itself, teaching your children about the universe and planets and the like can make for a good bedtime story.
Your child may be inspired
Many professionals working in industries around the world right now found their spark at a young, young age. A simple phrase or sentence was all it took to light the fire in their hearts, and this pushed them to become who they are today. This is the case with many NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) researchers and astronomers. Amazed by the idea of space as a child, they made it their goal to find out more about the stars.
While you don’t necessarily need to pigeonhole your child into a specific career, it never hurts to nudge them in a particular direction here and there to see if they have any interest. Who knows — one day, your child may be peering through a kids’ telescope, and the next thing you know, they’re the first human on Mars!
